It's because the links have DOS slashes in them which Internet
Explorer "fixes" to URL slashes, contrary to the standards.

and it transparently translates the absolute references because
you are accessing them from your machine, so it knows it's
your site.

At least it's not a link to file:\\C:\\My Documents\.... which
I've seen too many times to believe. ;)

A quick look at the disks suggests about half are CPN disks,
readable with CPMFiler, and half are UnixFS disks, which may
be readable with UnixFiler.
