You kind of have to when you simply want to plug into the
RGB output. If you want a circus of flying wires going into
the beeb, then sure, something else can be arranged. But
it's kind of the point that you don't.

Mode 7 does 'work', it's just that the odd and even fields
are actually different in content, whereas in modes 0
through 6 there is only a temporal difference. So mode 7
looks a little rough right now.

Probably the only conceivable way to do mode 7 without
interleaving the two fields in a big buffer is to trigger
interlaced output and display two black lines every four.
Probably won't look right.
