Subject: Noisy Beeb disk drive
Chaps and Chappettes
Picked up another BBC B issue 7 recently. Advertised as noisy [and it is],
so of course I thought 'PSU'.
However, the disk drive, which is quiet in another machine, is noisy in this
one even when not used, suggesting its possibly receiving too much power or
amplifying the noise somehow. The drive reads OK with another BBC B, but
does sound like its dragging the disk around excessively.
>From what I have read, it could be just noise suppression capacitors that
have gone and I will try and schedule a change of the PSU caps using this
kit from Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322001087042 but am I risking damage
to the drive by even connecting it? I haven't managed to get a read yet, but
I haven't tried a commercial disk (it's an Acorn DFS and most of my disks
were written with a Watford 1.54).
Would it be easy to upgrade this to an Acorn ADFS, and worth it?
Thanks,
Best,
John Terry
