Or use an old screwed-together cassette shell, carefully storing the
original spools to replace later.

Another useful tip is using a hand winder to run the tape through the
cassette a couple of times to see if it sticks anywhere.
I don't know whether one can still buy hand winders - they were very
popular years ago to save the battery life when using portable
cassette players.
