Ben,

You are allowed 10 retries on a read/write attempt.  With the motors just
starting
to spin you'll get errors, but you will be up to speed within the 10 and
then off
and running.  I know that it is not a clean approach but it has two things
in its
favor:
1. It is cheap
2. It works
