    Tony - I was very surprised to see that you consider it the
    responsibility of
    the BIOS to detect a disk-change.  I should think that would be an OS
    chore.  Comment ?

Hi Dave,

As you must realize, detection of a disk-change is actually a hardware
function.  The little microswitch on the disk drive door is usually
the mechanism.  It is, of course, up to the BIOS to pass this along to
the OS.
