The Rainbow uses XON/XOFF protocol.

I have a Rainbow and LA50 and have had no problem, here is how my
switches are set:

SW1 0-8 open
SW2 0-6,8 open 7 closed

The above switch settings are the 'as shipped default settings' as shown
on the LA50 manual on page 13.
