This is actually a rather popular thing to do to a Rainbow. I just put one in
mine a couple of days ago (sorry, I can't claim years), but lots of people
have done it.
The only caveat is that when you do it your Rainbow will no longer pass its
power-on diagnostics. However, I came across this on comp.sys.dec.micro the
other day (I've not tried it yet, so I can't say what it is or if it works):
