Notes on the Census CSV files ============================= All the raw census data files have been processed and converted into regular comparable CSV (comma-seperated variables) files. These CSV files have all been created to have the same fields and so are directly comparable. All field contents have been expanded to full form, removing any abbreviations, and all addresses have been fully canonicalised and missing addresses and house numbers added where possible. The CSV files have the following fields. Fields 1 to 12 are the specific information on the enumerated individual. Fields 13 to 19 are technical census register information. Any fields 20 and higher have data specific to that year's data and may be different between different files. Field Label Notes on contents 0 HOUSEHOLD NUMBER Household number within enumeration district 1 SURNAME Family name 2 NAME Personal name or names 3 AGE Age in years; or months, weeks, days 4 RELATIONSHIP "Head", "Wife", "Son", "Daughter", etc. 5 SEX "Male", "Female" or "" 6 MARITAL STATUS "Single", "Married", "Widow", "Widower", "" 7 STREET ADDRESS As fully canonicalised as possible 8 OCCUPATION 9 BIRTH YEAR Calculated from the age, or actual year, or full DOB 10 BIRTH PLACE Placename eg "Whitby" 11 BIRTH COUNTY Name or 3-letter abbreviation, eg "Yorkshire", "YKS", etc. 12 BIRTH COUNTRY "England", "Wales", "France", etc. 13 INDIVIDUAL NUMBER Individual number within census data 14 CIVIL PARISH "Whitby", "Ruswarp", etc. 15 SUB-REGISTRATION DISTRICT "Whitby", etc. 16 ENUMERATION DISTRICT Enumeration District, institution, vessel in harbour, etc. 17 PIECE Reference number for source document 18 PAGE Page number of document where multiple households per page 19 FOLIO Folio number of source document 20 POSTCODE "YO21 1EA", etc. 21+ Any additional source-specific information Surnames and personal names have been split into seperate fields. Where no sex was present in the source data it has been recreated, firstly from the relationship field, and then by matching known personal names. Street addresses ---------------- The street address is fully canonicalised. Any components to the address are seperated with commas. The first component is always the individual building. The final component is always the street name. The registration district is the post town, so adding this forms a full postal address.
