All the submissions stated that ward names should be a Stage Three consideration. Ideally, I would like some form of council competition to get the public involved in selecting ward names, but in the contracted timescale this is not feasible.
I give the following recommendations for selecting ward names in general:
Compound names should be avoided - names should not have "and" within them. They appear too artificial and the initial attempt to "placate" all the communities within a ward will be forgotten in the long run when people are more likely to start complaining about long cumbersome names.
If a ward names have a compass point in them there should be more than one. Sheffield currently has "South Wortley" with no corresponding "North Wortley".
Avoid duplicating a name in two wards, unless they are named with compass points.
Ward |
Name |
Rationale |
1 |
Park |
Before it was developed in the 1930, the open sweeps of land across the east of Sheffield were called Sheffield Park. Most of the new ward contains the current Park ward. |
2 |
Beauchief |
Most of the ward is made from the current Beauchief ward. Beauchief Woods and Beauchief Abbey are at the center of the ward. |
3 |
Beighton |
Beighton forms the greater part of this ward. |
4 |
If using my recommendation for ward 4 & 21: Base Green |
Base Green is at the center of this ward. |
4 |
If remain with PER draft: Birley |
Birley Spa is to the east and Birley is to the west of this ward. |
5 |
Broomhill |
Broomhill forms most of this ward and sits at the centre. |
6 |
Burngreave |
Burngreave forms the greatest geographical area of this ward and is a widely locally recognised name, it is the oldest name in the area. |
7 |
Sharrow |
Sharrow forms the larger part of this ward. |
8 |
Crookes |
With Crookes reunited in one ward it is appropriate that its name is revived. |
9 |
Darnall |
Most of the current Darnall ward now forms this ward, and Darnall itself is at the core. |
10 |
East Ecclesfield |
This covers the eastern part of Ecclesfield Parish, and it is difficult to come up with anything more suitable, as long as ward 27 is similarly called West Ecclesfield. |
11 |
Ecclesall |
This ward is at the centre of the old Ecclesall Bierlow, and Ecclesall is a locally recognised name. |
12 |
Longley |
Longley Park falls in the centre of this ward, and Longley Hall is to the south. |
13 |
Fulwood |
Fulwood is in the centre of this ward, and Fulwood Road forms an arterial road through the centre. Avoiding using Hallam avoids confusion with the constituency name. |
14 |
Gleadless Valley |
Gleadless valley runs through the entire ward, forming the spine. |
15 |
Graves Park |
Graves Park is at the center of this ward. In losing the name of one former Lord Mayor in the name Firth Park, we can gain another. |
16 |
Hillsborough |
All of this ward encompasses what many people think of as Hillsborough, and includes Hillsborough Shopping Centre, Hillsborough Park and Hillsborough Football Ground. |
17 |
Manor |
Sheffield Manor is at the centre of this ward. |
18 |
Mosborough |
This ward encompasses the old village area of Mosborough plus the new developments perceived as Mosborough – Waterthorpe, Westfield and Owlthorpe. |
19 |
Nether Edge |
Nether Edge comprises almost the whole of this ward. |
20 |
Southey Green |
Most of the current Southey Green ward forms this new ward. |
21 |
Richmond |
Richmond and Richmond Park form the core of this ward. |
22 |
Shiregreen |
Shiregreen forms most of this ward. Avoiding using Brightside avoids confusion with the constituency name. |
23 |
Bradfield |
While Stannington forms the largest single community within this ward, concerns have been expressed that other communities would feel "taken over" if the ward were named Stannington. Although this is also the name of the Parish Council, naming the ward after one of the smallest communities would be a unifying feature. |
24 |
Ewden |
To avoid Oughtibridge feeling as though they have been annexed by Stocksbridge, a smaller community name should be used, as with Bradfield. The Ewden valley runs across the center of the ward. Any suggestions from Stocksbridge and Oughtibridge respondents are likely to be better than this. |
25 |
Dore |
The majority of this ward is formed from most of the current Dore ward. |
26 |
Walkley |
Walkley forms most of this ward and is at the center of it. It is common to see addresses in Upperthorpe referred to as Walkley. |
27 |
West Ecclesfield |
This covers the western part of Ecclesfield Parish, and it is difficult to come up with anything more suitable, as long as ward 10 is similarly called East Ecclesfield. |
28 |
Woodhouse |
The whole of Woodhouse forms most of this ward. Naming it Handsworth ward would continue to cause confusion as a part of Handsworth is still in another ward. |
