Proposed Ward Names

I would prefer not to include any proposed ward names with this submission, but the rules state that I have to. I would prefer any ward names to be allocated to the new wards once they have been put in place after the completion of the review in consultation with local residents and other interested parties. There will be an opportunity at Stage Three of the review for members of the public to put foreward better suggestions.

In deciding suitable ward names I have tried to avoid the names of other existing elected bodies - town and parish councils - and likely names of future Parliamentary Constituencies. Also, I have aimed to avoid appearing to favour a particular identity over another in wards that are made up of several communities.

Ward

Name

Rationale

1

Wharncliffe

"Stocksbridge" could cause confusion with the Town Council, and could be seen as Stocksbridge annexing Ewden and Wharncliffe Side.

2

3

Ecclesfield West

Ecclesfield East

While this appears to single out a single community within these two wards, it is the name of the Parish Council that it covers. In this, it could cause confusion with the parish council. I could not find any suitable anonymous name, and any names other people come up with, particularly parish councillors, are likely to be much more suitable. It is interesting to note that between 1973 and 1980 the two wards covering this area were called "Ward 29" and "Ward 30".

4

Broomhead

"Bradfield" would cause confusion with the parish council, and choosing from Stannington or Loxley could appear to be favouring one community over another. "South Wortley" has caused confusion over the years, as Wortley is not in Sheffield and the name is seen as having no local significance. Broomhead Moor forms a large area of the open countryside in the centre of the ward, and Broomhead Reserviour and Broomhead Hall are locally known landmarks.

5

Hillsborough

All of this ward encompasses what many people think of as Hillsborough, and includes Hillsborough Shopping Centre, Hillsborough Park and Hillsborough Football Ground.

6

Parson Cross

Parson Cross forms the majority of this ward, and is one of the oldest community names in the area.

7

Longley

Longley Park falls in the centre of this ward, and Longley Hall is to the south.

8

Concord

Concord Park falls in the centre of this ward and avoids favouring either Shiregreen or Wincobank.

9

Fulwood

Fulwood is in the centre of this ward, and Fulwood Road forms an arterial road through the centre. Avoiding using Hallam avoids confusion with the constituency name.

10

Lydgate

The ward encompasses both communities of Crookes and Crosspool. It is difficult to find a single identifying name, but Lydgate Lane joins the two and Lydgate School is in the centre of the ward.

11

Walkley

All of Walkley forms the core of this ward.

12

Burngreave

This is the oldest name in the area, and is better recognised that other names in the area.

13

Attercliffe

Revives the old Attercliffe name from on of the townships merged to form Sheffield in 1843 and avoids seeming to favour either Darnall or Tinsley.

14

Broomhill

Broomhill is at the centre of this ward.

15

Sharrow

Sharrow forms the largest part of this ward.

16

Manor

Sheffield Manor is at the centre of this ward.

17

Dore & Totley

To avoid appearing to favour one community, a compound name should be used.

18

Ecclesall

This ward is at the centre of the old Ecclesall Bierlow, and Ecclesall is a locally recognised name.

19

Nether Edge

Nether Edge comprises almost the whole of this ward.

20

Sheffield Park

Before it was developed in the 1930, the open sweeps of land across the east of Sheffield were called Sheffield Park, and this revives the old name.

21

Gleadless

Gleadless Valley and Gleadless form the core of this ward.

22

Richmond

Richmond and Richmond Park form the core of this ward.

23

Handsworth Woodhouse

Most of the current Handsworth Ward is in actuality Woodhouse, and arguably the ward should be called Woodhouse. Unifying most of the rest of Handsworth together results in a ward formed from two similar-sized communities. A compound name should be used to reflect this.

24

Beauchief

Beauchief is an old local name, and Beauchief Abbey is at the centre of the ward.

25

Woodseats

Woodseats has been split for many years and this ward unifies it. Most of the ward is seen as Woodseats and the eastern end is Norton Woodseats.

26

Frecheville

Frecheville is at the centre of this ward and forms the bulk of the area.

27

Beighton

Beighton is an old name and the community is at the centre of this ward and forms a large part of the ward.

28

Mosborough

This ward encompasses the old village area of Mosborough plus the new developments perceived as Mosborough - Waterthorpe, Westfield and Owlthorpe.
