I know it's been 3 months since anybody last posted on this topic, but could
the game in question be Skyhawk from Pace Software? It does seem to match the
description ...

Regarding the 'Chopper' game that was discussed, I don't think this is the one
as it seems to be just a Defender/Planetoid clone (or possibly even a hack).
