If mail program places cursor, signature and an inviting 2 blank lines at the 
top of the reply (all above the quoted text) it is difficult to resist the 
temptation to type away rather than have to manually copy'n'paste the lot into 
the right place.

This is what Outlook does, in contrast to Pine which sticks the signature in 
the right place even though from memory the cursor starts at the top under the 
"XYZ wrote" line.
