It's not *very* difficult, and the BBC is simple enough that you should 
be able to repair the damage if you do screw up.

A top tip, if you're trying to remove a faulty chip, is to cut all its 
legs off with fine-tipped side cutters before you try to desolder any of 
them.  Then you can pull each one out of the board individually while you 
heat it, and clear the hole of solder later.  This is far easier than 
trying to get *all* the legs clear enough of solder that you can pull the 
whole chip out intact, and you run less risk of damaging the PCB.  
Obviously it's not a good idea if you're trying to salvage the chip to 
use as a spare, though. :)
