It's not the transformer.  It's one or both of two high-value, high-wattage
resistors in the startup circuit within the PSU.  I have fixed more of
these than you have had hot dinners.

Get it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing, because when
these resistors fail, the mains filter cap in the PSU remains charged up
and can deliver a very dangerous and painful shock.

I wouldn't expect repair to cost more than twenty quid.

Your problem with "not a language" is caused by loss of configuration.  Get
the CMOS battery replaced (about a tenner from an Acorn dealer) and read
about *CONFIGURE, *UNPLUG and *INSERT in the manual.

Hey everyone!

I picked up a BBC Master 128 from an ad in the Diamond free ads. When I got
it home it worked fine, however, hen I switched it off, it would not come
back on again. A few days later, due to boredom, I tried switching it on
again. It worked. However, it only seems to want to work every couple of
days. I had it looked at and was told that the transformer in the power
pack
was a little dodgy.

The last time I got it to work (yesterday evening) I got the Acorn MOS
message and then this: "This is not a language" and then just an asterix
(*). I have the Pen Down rom in it (already installed when I got it) I have
tried pushing on the Basic rom and it clicked further down into the slot.
However it still does register it.

Any ideas?
