       Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.

       I finally tracked the problem down to a missing link (S8 I think it
was). The Advanced Ref Man DFS fitting instructions state that this link is
required for issue 1,2 & 3 boards. I've got an issue 7 board, so I
immediately went on to the next paragraph of the fitting instructions. When
I was tracing through the schematic I spotted this link which connects the
head load signal from the 8271 to the drive, so it IS required for all
boards. I soldered a jumper block across these terminals and everything came
up fine.

       Don't believe everything you read ;-)
