Two generators back-to-back, one operating as a motor and one as a
generator, with set of gears between them. This method only works with
three-phase. They had one at the college I went to.

God, merkian domestic electrical wiring is appalling. No such thing as a
ring main, every socket is a spur from the distribution board - so dozens
of fuse-ways and miles and miles of cable, so a certain piece of wall
could have dozens of power cables running parrallel to each other behind
it. And as for the earthing systems....
