Wouter Scholten produced "bbcim" a few years back (available on TBL!'s
software page) which works on the most common BBC disk image formats. 
It's a bit... uhm... un-userfriendly, but does the job very well.  If
you'd like to start on writing your own utility, Wouter's source code
should provide a good base.
