that's right. I like your description of the riser socket! The disc
controller chip is mounted on the other side of the board on top of the
'birdcage'.

that's correct. You have an upgraded disc controller there. If the
original Acorn disc controller had been fitted, this socket would have a
chip in it.

Don't take it out, it does need to be there. It's a wire link, not a
staple.

What happens when you type *TAPE? Try *TAPE, followed by *MOTOR 1 and
the 'cassette' LED on the keyboard should light up.
