Subject: Firetrack scrolling ... solved at last
Hiya,
Well I fiddled around the other evening, using those CPC docs as a guide, and
I've finally managed to reproduce the Firetrack scrolling, but - even better -
I've got it running in a window too! It relies on that 'vertical rupture'
stuff that was detailed in the CPC doc that Thomas Harte pointed our way.
What amazes me is that it's a very easy and cheap technique - it doesn't rely
on any particularly sensitive timing - and you can even get it running without
any initial glitch or anything. The first time I had a fully hardware
scrolled pixel-by-pixel scrolling screen running in a Mode 2 window, I
couldn't even believe it was running on a Beeb - I'd never seen anything like
it. It's so frustrating to think of the sort of games we could've had on the
Beeb with such beautiful scrolling, but as far as I'm aware, only Firetrack
ever exploited the method.... unless anyone knows differently.
cheers,
Rich :)
