Another tip that I have found useful is to rummage around in the junk
box for a socket to accept the plug you are wiring (or purchase one when
buying the plugs). Clamp this into the vice, then push the pins of the
plug into the socket. Even if the plastic does become soft under the
heat of the iron, the pins should remain in their correct places.
