Subject: Re: BBC B question?

The socket at the left of the keyboard, if it's part of the Acorn Speech
upgrade, was intended for plugging in Serial EPROMs to expand the speech
vocabulary and/or provide a ROM cartridge system for other software.

It was never really exploited as such, as the Serial EPROMs were never readily
available.

As such, other companies produced alternative cartridge sockets to fit in
this "ash-tray", as it was nick-named, which connected direct to a spare
sideways ROM socket internally.
