I'm sure Gareth Babb can correct me on this since he's done more Viewdata 
and teletext emulation programming than I have, but isn't there a bug in 
hold/release which means the behaviour isn't as documented?

I seem to remember this from when I did the TCP/IP Viewdata client for Windoze.
