think that I have messed up some of the motherboard connections somehow, but
the chip has NOT blown (it still registers with *HELP). The drive just
whirrs forever and gives up trying to read the data in.

It could just be that the ribbon cable between your Beeb and the disk drive
has come loose.  I've had the same symptom caused by the cable coming loose
inside the disk drive when moving it to open up my Beeb, which made me think
I'd done more serious damage.
