Thanks to all who've replied so far - all very interesting.

The article sounds extremely interesting. If you could dig out the
article and scan it or something I would be very grateful - but don't
bother if it's lots of hassle. 

I was thinking along the lines of interpreting the note on/off and
perhaps velocity events and playing the right notes on the speaker, and
pretty much ignoring all other MIDI data. My knowledge of MIDI is
virtually non-existant, unfortunately, so I don't think my brain could
cope with much more! 

I don't have any particular reason for wanting to do this - I just
thought it might be fun :-)
