Hi,
Now we have settled on a suitable file format. How many bit colour are the
scans going to be in? 16 as early magazine had a limited palette as it was
expensive to produce colour. or 8bit grey scale or monochromatic?

PNG is a good choice as it was brought in to replace gif due to copyright
issues with LZW. Plus it support 24bit and alpha blending and will reduce
the palette if not all the colours are used.

This provides a good intro to PNG for those that are interested:

It certainly looks like a far safer choice than djvu. Seems fairly stable
and
isn't too overcomplicated with flashy features.

As an aside its interesting to note from the section on support that Acorn
were (and pretty much still are) the only company to support PNG properly in
their web browser. Not sure if this was publicised at the time or not, but I
certainly hadn't heard about it.
