It'll fit, but it'll fit with the notch to East OR West. The only
problem you'd have getting it to fit at all would arise if the plug had
two notches, but the socket had only one. The serial port on the Beeb
is a domino pattern, which is symmetrical- it'll fit either way- honest!

The preferred orientation depends on how you have soldered your plug
together ;-) When I made my serial cable (using the pinout from the back
of the Master Service Manual), I plugged it into the Beeb then marked
the top with my soldering iron so I could remember which way to plug it
in in the future.
Decide which way YOU want the notch to go, and then solder to the
pins accordingly. Does that make any sense? Probably not..... I'm crap
at explaining things!
Hmm... ok you are right - but what I do not understand is that if the
plug has one notch on it and the socket has two locating lugs, how does
the plug still fit into the socket??
