Hi Jonathan,
I once had a similar problem with a BBC it turned out to be the reset
circuitry located around the NE555 IC at the back left corner near the
P.S.U. , one of the capacitors needed to be replaced to fix the problem.
Not having a diagram in front of me I can't give you more detail than that,
but if you need more info I can have a look at home.
