OK, I get something like this:
                                           BASIC
                    BASIC
BASIC
                    BASIC

Then a flashing cursor, but no > prompt, until I press RETURN a number of
times.

Yep, that changes the screen resolution, but the problem remains.

PS: Mmm, Michael Foot... Why do I get the feeling I've heard of you before.
Have you had dealings with other computers in the past (by others, I mean
other now orphaned computers) ?
