How hard to try that as a test? Just to see if everything starts working
at least you know that's what the problem is, and it isn't down to
something else.

If toggling the lines manually (presumably the beeb has enough speed
that you can introduce delays in software?) still doesn't work, then it
suggests the problem is something else entirely...

Just a thought anyway.
