Reasonable thumbnails help, and then you can have links to medium- and
large-sized images (see David Guesswein's site for an idea). The
thumbnails needn't be a small version of the whole image; it might in
smoe cases be appropriate to make the thumbnail from just a section
(2/3, maybe) of the original --then it's not quite so lacking in
detail.
But do make sure the thumbnails are pre-scaled to the correct
size/resolution, not just a reference to the full image and a note on
what to scale it to. A distant relative did that, with the result that
his thumbnail page takes about ten minutes to load and saves no
bandwidth at all!
