And don't bother looking at the data sheets, they don't seem to make much
sense. Page 2 has a table to this 
effect (fixed width fonts ready?):

Table 1: attenuation control

Bit position   weight
0   1   2   3

0   0   0   1    2db
0   0   1   0    4db
0   1   0   0    8db
1   0   0   0   16db
1   1   1   1    off

But if you solve that you find that bit 3 has a weight of 8db, bit 2 a weight
of 6db, bit 1 a weight of 2db and bit 
0 a weight of -6db. Which'd be great if negative decibels made any sense
whatsoever.
