There aren't any directories as such. Standard DFS allows you 31 files per
disk (or, rather, per side-of-disk, if you have a double-sided drive).

The directories are really just single character prefixes to the
filenames. Normally, it's $ (eg, $.!BOOT, $.FILE), but can be something
else, eg A.FILE, B.FILE, C.FILE

Various other DFSes allowed more files per side-of-disk. I think the
Watford one, for example, allowed you to have 62.
