I would have thought 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 would be correct. Anyway, my
recollections is that audio DIN connections are imbalanced, that
is, they are not symetrical around the middle pin.
Checking the User Guide confirms this, and also shows that the BBC
outputs to both pin 1 and 4, so it could be that the recorder you
are using only takes input on pin 4, so won't see anything on pin
1. Try ensuring all lines connect straight through:
7 motor 1
3 input ------------- 3 Sound out
BBC 5 nc ------------- 5 Tape
Tape 2 0v ------------- 2 0v Recorder
Socket 4 output ------------- 4 Sound in
1 output ------------- 1 Sound in
6 motor 2
