It's for serially-accessed speach Phrase ROMs (PHROMs). Another
ribbon cable connects the keyboard PCB to the main PCB. PHROMs
could then be plugged into the "ashtray".
 
Very few people actually used the slot for this. Many people wired
up an external ROM socket there with a ribbon cable connecting to
one of the internal ROM sockets.
