Aah, that must be it!  The discs I have were produced in the mid 1990s (very
modern, actually, I
thought!) so it looks like I am going to have to watch "Day of the Daleks"

No, going from memory. I have a feeling the standard for audio encoding
on laserdiscs changed at some point and the VP-415 is too old to work
with the audio encoding on modern discs.
