For the benefit of others (and by way of thanks), I should point out
that Jonathan's advice was completely successful. Just wiping the dust
off the outside of the membrane and putting everything back together
again was enough to get the keyboard working fine. Peeling the membranes
apart would certainly seem to be unnecessary and probably not a good
idea.

This should apply to Masters (later version) /Compacts as well.
