This may sound like a silly question, but how long after powering up and
listening to the long continuous tone did you leave it before switching off
again?

reason I ask, I used to run a lot of beebs 24/7 (multi-user BBS, econeted
system - had about eight at one point. Well, it was a lot for me!) and a
problem I came across several times was that one of the capacitors in the
PSU would fail, causing a longer and longer initial tone (of the two tones
the B usually makes) before powering on properly. I had one machine took
about 24 hours to power on before I got around to fixing it.

Because of the age, and the tendancy for some capacitors to dry out over
time, it may therefore be a PSU issue ....

If you still can't get it going, but still have the urge to play, I have
several spare systems here, (including floppy drives!) so if you can stand
a trip to Manchester I'll do you a swap.

Rob.
