Right.  (Can I interest you in helping with the software for our AVR
based box, by any chance?)

Yeah.  Actually, my first thought was to use a 6502 as well.  But more
modern alternatives are smaller and faster, and I don't happen to have
any spare 6502s lying around anymore.  So, I figured that the Atmel chip
was probably a better bet.
