Could be the memory design. IIRC a single 64K x 4 bit RAM chip is used,
so two access cycles to the memory must be made to get/put a whole byte.
This is taken care of by the special Electron chip which contains a lot
of other glue logic.

In modes 0-3 that could be the issue.
Have you tried further slowing down the Econet clock, when using
these memory hungry screen modes?
