OK, I'll try that and see what happens.

DFS works fine and the only thing I haven't tried which has been mentioned
is to format a floppy to ADFS format and see if it will read that.  I am
trying to
recall where I might have a copy of AFORM for the BBC B rather than the more
usual Master version but I think the Econet Level 3 FS disc might be the 
answer.

Try removing DFS 2.0j, or upgrading to 2.26. There's a nasty bug in 2.0j
which means no service call is sent round when the workspace is claimed
which causes all sorts of funnies,
