Thought I had better change the subject header.
Although things were a little different from those you described (PB05 was
in the second socket next to the PB04) followed by the ROM for the word
processor and the DFS ROM - the right hand socket was empty.
This was how the machine was given to me and it did work and was how it came
from the store (the person who gave it to me wouldn't even dare open it and
wouldn't know anything about what goes on onside).
Anyway, I tried the configuration you gave me (PB05 in right hand socket),
checked everything else and I'm afraid it has made no difference.
Unfortunately, when putting the PB05 back where it was, one of the legs came
off but it still seems to be making contact as far as I can tell.
All the chips seem firmly seated and connected.
The only thing I had touched was the ROM above those first mentioned which
has a big metal thing stuck to the top of it with white stuff and that too
seems well-seated.
You are a little too far away for me to drop it in to you - I'm in
Liverpool.
Never mind, it was one last try to get it back working. It was a gift from a
friend and I only had it a few weeks (working fine) before I switched it on
one morning and beeeeeeeeeeb so I am feeling a little guilty about breaking
it.
