The BBC Micro doesn't have a volume control (neither in software nor 
hardware) - however, a quick google usually turns up many and various 
designs on implementing one using a variable resistor.

The speaker is connected by a two-pin connector, so making the 
modification is easily done, probably without even needing to have words 
with soldering irons.
