I vaguely remember some request in that direction but
most people seem to make do with the parallel path laid
out for them ...

I don't know, it's just a different cable basically.
And still a 'custom' one since there's a BBC at one
end ... It seems somewhat pointless, doing a serial
version, except for the fact that the cable could
definitely be longer for a serial connection. But
going from 30 to something like 2 KB/sec would be
painful, almost physically so ...
