Hmm, I've had more than one 7438 just die on me too...

Without being near to one of my machines to check, I seem to remember that 
Torch did exactly that with their Z80 copros (Acorn wanted you to buy in to 
their cheese-wedge concept I suppose)

I'd expect you're fairly close to the PSU limit though; I think personally - 
what with the machines getting a little old and tired - I'd always use an 
external PSU where possible.

If you're near Cambridge I think I have a spare compact +5V/12V PSU kicking 
around - I'm not back in the UK until next month though. Local freecycle list 
will certainly get you a scrap PC to pull a power supply from, at least! :)
