The parity mod is to generate parity out of the MDFS, which allows you
to use SCSI drives that expect to see parity on the bus.  I'm pretty
sure the MDFS itself never checks parity even with the mod.

So, the summary is that without the mod, you must disable parity on your
drives (and are SOL if your drive doesn't have the option to disable
it).  With the mod, you can use drives either with or without parity.
