You're thinking about early 5.25" drives where the head was a
different size on 40 track and 80 track drives. Nothing to do with
data density.

No, if you format a HD *disk* at DD density, regardless of the
drive. For example, formating a "blue"/"one hole"/"720K" disk to
1440K DOS or 1600K ADFS.
