Subject: Domesday Thoughts
Yes, I meant to mention running Domesday on the ARM Co-pro,
that would be great! I'm not sure there would be too much of a
speed increase if using the LV-ROM player as disc access is very
very slow which accounts for most of the time it takes to do
anything.
The idea behind me copying these discs is:
a) to see if it could be done easily or even at all
b) to preserve the data itself as it seems to me that the discs and
players are fairly fragile and one day there won't be any left
I know it's been done before and you can see an approximation of
the Domesday System online but I wanted to find an "Acorn"
solution. Just think if this had been thought of a couple of years ago,
(it's still not too late) then we could have had the prospect of
"Domesday on RISC-PC" with some sort of special format CD or
DVD containing the original data and images/moving film sequences,
just in time for the 20th anniversary and it might have given a
welcome boost to the RISC-OS market.
The Domesday1986 website is OK, very good work in fact, BUT:
1. The overlay of BBC-generated text/menus is lost
2. The title sequence and sound is lost
3. The ability to generate graphs, charts, tables etc. by area and
so on is lost.
4. The National Disc is not represented at all.
5. London, Volcanoes, Countryside, Ecodisc are not represented
(although strictly speaking these are "AIV discs" rather than
"Domesday discs")
So, yes, Domesday has been saved, to an extent, but there is
still quite a lot that can be done.
As to what to do with the data when it's copied, if I ever get it
finished (see next post) then as far as I'm concerned, anyone
who wants a copy of the data can have it on the same basis
that anybody can have a copy of (C) Acorn BBC BASIC, (C)
Acornsoft Elite or (C) Computer Concepts Inter-Word if he looks
in the right places on the Tinterweb.
Best wishes,
Ian

Or even better if it ran faster than a real 6502 it would speed up the
domesday system.
Ian, what are you trying to copy from the domesday disks, and what are you
planning to do with it ?
