Surely it's going to be slow as mole-asses to actually use for anything 
productive though? Memory's cheap, but bus bandwidth isn't - aren't we still 
constrained by a relatively-slow 8 bit CPU for display memory accesses on the 
"interactive" side of the system?

Seconded - plus people aren't going to want to spend money for features that 
they might not need anyway. Get the core going which does the job of being 
compatible with the original machine first, give it a flexible bus (e.g. TUBE 
or TUBE-with-extras), sort out the expansion options later.
