Actually, pleased to say that I goofed :-) I saw the 81xx part numbers and 
thought they were some sort of PAL device - but actually they're just 
TTL-compatible latches with a different pinout to the usual 74xx series parts.

So thankfully, that makes things a little more pleasant :-)
